Molio Connect Privacy Policy

Molio Connect ("the Extension", "we", "us") is a browser extension that lets you save web pages, highlights, and notes into your local Molio knowledge base. This Privacy Policy explains how we collect, use, store, and share information when you use the Extension.

1. Information We Collect

We collect only the information necessary to provide the Extension's functionality. All data collection happens locally on your device unless you explicitly choose to send data elsewhere.

1.1 Web Content You Actively Clip

When you use the Extension to clip a web page, we access and process:

• The URL of the current page
• The page title
• The page body/content you choose to clip
• Any highlighted text or snippets you select
• Your annotations tied to a page URL

This processing happens locally in your browser. The Extension does not send this content to any remote server operated by us.

1.2 Settings and Preferences

We store your local preferences and configuration, including:

• Extension settings (e.g., clipper window size, reader settings)
• Highlight settings and domain-specific settings
• Templates and property configurations
• Provider presets and your custom AI interpreter configurations (base URL, API key, model name)
• Usage statistics such as clip count (stored locally only)

1.3 Technical Information

The Extension may collect limited technical information required for operation, such as:

• Browser tab information (URL, title) for the active tab you are clipping
• Errors and warnings logged to the browser console for debugging purposes

We do not collect device identifiers, IP addresses, browsing history, or analytics data.

2. How We Use Your Information

We use the information we collect solely to provide the Extension's core features:

• Clipping web pages: Save the content you choose into your local Molio knowledge base.
• Highlights: Store and display your highlights and annotations.
• Reader mode: Render a clean reading view of web pages.
• Preferences: Remember your settings across browser sessions.
• Local AI interpretation (optional): If you configure an AI provider, send page content to that provider only when you explicitly trigger the interpreter feature.

We do not use your data for advertising, profiling, analytics, telemetry, or any other secondary purpose.

3. How We Store Your Information

3.1 Local Browser Storage

Your settings, highlights, templates, and provider configurations are stored locally using the browser's Storage API (chrome.storage.local and chrome.storage.sync).

• chrome.storage.local: Stores larger or device-specific data such as highlights and clip history.
• chrome.storage.sync: Stores settings and templates if you are signed into a browser sync account.

Data stored in chrome.storage.sync may be synchronized by your browser provider (e.g., Google) according to their own terms and privacy policies.

3.2 Local Molio Desktop Application

When you save a clip, the Extension sends the clipped content via an HTTP request to the Molio desktop application running locally on your computer at http://localhost:3100. The content is then written to your local file system inside your chosen Molio vault.

No clipped content is ever sent to our servers or any third-party server by the Extension.

4. Information Sharing and Disclosure

We do not sell, rent, or share your personal information with third parties.

The Extension shares data only in the following limited circumstances:

4.1 With Your Local Molio Application

Clipped content and note metadata are sent to the Molio desktop application running locally on your device via http://localhost:3100.

4.2 With External AI Providers You Choose

If you enable and configure an external AI interpreter (e.g., OpenAI, OpenRouter, or a custom provider), the page content you choose to interpret is sent directly to that provider's API endpoint using the base URL and API key you provide. Molio does not intermediate, store, or process these requests on our servers.

You are responsible for reviewing the privacy policy of any external AI provider you choose.

4.3 With Your Browser Sync Service

If you use browser sync, settings and templates stored in chrome.storage.sync may be synchronized by your browser vendor. This is governed by your browser vendor's privacy policy.

4.4 External Preset List

The Extension downloads a public list of AI provider presets from https://raw.githubusercontent.com/obsidianmd/obsidian-clipper/refs/heads/main/providers.json. This request does not include any user data, identifiers, or telemetry.

5. Your Choices and Rights

You have full control over your data:

• Clipping: You decide which pages to clip and when.
• Highlights: You can view, edit, and delete your highlights at any time.
• AI interpretation: You choose whether to configure an external AI provider and which provider to use.
• Storage: You can export or delete your Extension data using the browser's extension storage management options.
• Access and deletion: Because all data is stored locally, you can remove it at any time by uninstalling the Extension or clearing the Extension's storage.

6. Data Security

We take reasonable measures to protect your data:

• All processing of clipped content happens locally in your browser.
• Content is sent to your local Molio application over localhost, which does not leave your device.
• API keys for external AI providers are stored locally in your browser's encrypted storage.

7. Data Retention

We retain your data only as long as you keep the Extension installed and the data stored locally. Uninstalling the Extension or clearing its storage will delete the locally stored data. We do not retain copies on our servers because we do not receive your data.

8. Children's Privacy

The Extension is not intended for use by children under the age of 13. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children under 13.

9. Changes to This Privacy Policy

We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. We will post the updated policy at https://zhuzhaoyun.github.io/Molio/privacy.html and update the effective date at the top of this policy. Continued use of the Extension after changes constitutes acceptance of the updated policy.
